General description of the collection: The Allen family collection contain preservation copies of newspaper clippings, correspondence from Marcella Allen Lewis, Bertram's grand daughter (donor), two photographs of Bertram, and Bertram's promotion certificate to T/SGT. The newspaper clippings detail the first days of Bertram's time in Cuba up until the day he was shot. They take the form of published letters to his mother and from his mother to a family friend. The letter from Marcella Allen Lewis gives a brief description of the history of Bertram and Claude. The photographs are of Bertram when he was about eighteen and another of him in uniform. The certificate is of Bertram attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant on 24 September 1928, and is signed by his brother, Captain Claude L. Allen.

Bertram Marcellus Allen was a private in Company G, 34th Michigan Volunteer Infantry in Cuba during the Spanish American War. Claude L. was the younger brother of Bertram and Mary Nesbitt was their mother. Bertram was wounded in early July 1898 near Santiago, Cuba. He was shot through the jaw and was transported back to the States and eventually to Fort McPherson Hospital.
